THE MADONNA AND CHILD
First Day of Issue: October 30, 1985
First Issue Location: Detroit, Michigan
One of the most popular sculptors of the early Italian
Renaissance, Luca della Robbia created some of the
world's most beautiful works of sculpture in terra-cotta
earthenware. Working with simple pottery clay, della
Robbia created magnificent sculptured reliefs of white
glazed earthenware against a stunning blue background.
* Most of his works featured the Madonna and Child,
graceful choirs of angels, and the profiles of revered
saints. His flawless figures and harmonious compositions
with their unique charm and beauty have inspired gen-
erations of succeeding artists. One of Luca della Robbia's
most famous works is featured on one of America's 1985
Christmas stamps. Depicting the pure white figures of
the Madonna and Child, this magnificent sculptured
relief was completed around the year 1450. Like all of
della Robbia's works, this masterpiece captures the
beauty of human emotion with the tender embrace of
Mary and the Christ Child — one of the most enduring
symbols of Christmas.
