First Day of Issue: February 27, 1986
First Issue Location: Washington, D.C.
A vigorous supporter of the First Amendment and civil
rights, Hugo Black was one of the most memorable
justices ever to serve on the United States Supreme
Court. Black became interested in law and politics at an
early age and attended Alabama Law School when he
was just eighteen. His political aspirations led him to
seek a term as a U.S. Senator in 1925. It was during his
terms as senator that Hugo Black became a staunch
supporter of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal
measures. Inspired by his loyal support, Roosevelt made
Black his first appointment to the United States Supreme
Court. Black's appointment to the highest tribunal proved
him to be a champion of individual liberty and civil
rights. The Court, led by Hugo Black, wrote major deci-
sions that favored the rights of blacks to fair trials and
equal justice . . . and confirmed the First Amendment
rights of groups to distribute religious literature. Today,
Hugo Black is remembered as a pioneer in upholding
the rights and fundamental freedoms of all Americans.
