BELVA ANN LOCKWOOD
First Day of Issue: June 18, 1986
First Issue Location: Middleport, New York
Belva Ann Lockwood is well-known for her brave, his-
tory-making fight for women's rights. The apparent
hopelessness of the situation motivated her to fight a
fifty-year battle campaigning for women's equality. She
refused to allow discrimination to stand in her way, and
became one of the first women in the United States to
practice law, the first to argue a case before the Supreme
Court, and the first woman to campaign actively for
President. By 1879, Belva Lockwood had successfully
lobbied Congress into passing a law allowing her to
practice before the highest courts in the land. During
her half-century campaign Belva Lockwood supported
uniform marriage and divorce laws and equal property
rights for women. As a politician, she encouraged foreign
trade, payment of the public debt, and education for all.
In honor of Belva Ann Lockwood and her fight for
women's rights, the United States issued the stamp fea-
tured on this Maximum Card.
