FATHER EDWARD FLANAGAN
First Day of Issue: July 14, 1986
First Issue Location: Boys Town, Nebraska
On December 10, 1917 five orphaned boys in Omaha,
Nebraska were welcomed into a new home by Father
Edward Flanagan. Father Flanagan wanted to take these
children and teach them love, respect — for self and
others — and the values of hard work and a good edu-
cation. With only faith and a borrowed $90, Father
Flanagan rented a home for the boys to live. Within two
months he had fifty abandoned youth living at the home
— and the story of Boys Town had begun. In the spring
of 1918, Father Flanagan rented the former German
American Home, and soon had 100 boys living under
his roof. As time went on Boys Town grew and Father
Flanagan's dreams were realized. In 1934 Boys Town
became an official incorporated village with a post office,
school, town council and mayor. Today Father Flana-
gan's Boys Town covers 1500 acres and helps over 7000
troubled youth per year. The stamp on this Maximum
Card was issued in honor of the 100th anniversary of
the birth of Father Edward Flanagan.
