MARGARET MITCHELL
First Day of Issue: June 30, 1986
First Issue Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Born on November 8, 1900, in Atlanta, Georgia, Mar-
garet Mitchell was brought up in a family with deep
southern roots. She had an incredible passion for the
South's rich heritage and this was revealed in her epic
novel "Gone With The Wind." Published in 1936, this
extraordinary novel was a rambling, colorful, historical
story about the people of the deep south during and after
the Civil War. The story follows the life of the strong,
willful and sometimes scandalous woman of the promi-
nent Tara plantation, Scarlet O'Hara. Throughout the
story Scarlet is torn between the man she loves — the
quite and timid Ashley Wilkes — and the man she
marries — the brash, debonair gentleman, Rhett Butler.
This brilliant work, Mitchell's only novel, was awarded
the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, and in 1939 made
into a motion picture which set new attendance records.
Margaret Mitchell is honored with the stamp on this
Maximum Card which celebrates the fiftieth anniversary
of the publication of her magnificent novel, “Gone With
The Wind."
