THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
First Day of Issue: July 4, 1986
First Issue Location: New York, New York
The Lady, the Goddess, Miss Liberty — she has been
called many names, but she has always been the symbol
of freedom. The Statue was a gift to the people of the
United States of America — whose search for liberty
helped inspire the French in their own search. The in-
credible statue was an idea of a young sculptor, Frederic
Auguste Bartholdi. Given the name Liberty Enlightening
the World, the Statue was envisioned by its sculptor as
an inspiration for all nations, for all peoples, for all times.
After several attempts, Bartholdi created a serene but
forceful woman in classical garb, with an upheld torch
of freedom, a crown of radiant light, chains of bondage
broken at her feet, and a sacred tablet inscribed with the
date July 4, 1776. Since her dedication in 1886, the
Statue of Liberty has stood proudly over New York Har-
bor, beckoning the thousands of immigrants from far
away lands onto her free and prospering shores. The
of the Statue of Liberty on her 100th anniversary.
