First Issue Location: Washington, D.C.
Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, on June 6, 1886, Dr.
Paul Dudley White became a noted American physician,
and one of the world's leading authorities on heart dis-
ease. A prominent pioneer in the diagnosis, treatment
and prevention of diseases of the heart and circulatory
system, Dr. White was among the first doctors in the
United States to use the electorcardiograph to detect
cardiac disorders. In his lectures and teachings through-
out the world, White stressed the tremendous importance
of weight control, a proper diet and plenty of exercise.
After President Dwight Eisenhower was stricken with a
coronary thrombosis in 1955, White was specifically
chosen to be the President's chief medical consultant.
In 1971, Dr. White visited the People's Republic of
China to teach them about his theories on heart disease,
and to learn about their unique and different types of
medical practices. White was also the founder of the
American Heart Association, and served as its president
from 1942 to 1944.
