First Issue Location: New York, New York
Born in Kovno, Lithuania, Dr. Bernard Revel, was recog-
nized at a very early age for his extraordinary ability to
memorize and expound selections from ancient Rabbinic
writings. He came to the United States when he was
twenty-one and enrolled in the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan
Theological Seminary (RIETS) in New York. After receiv-
ing his doctorate in Philosophy from Dropsie College in
Philadelphia, he assumed the presidency of RIETS, and
began to carefully plan and gently nurture America's first
college under Jewish auspices. Offering a liberal arts
program in conjunction with historical Jewish studies,
Yeshiva College graduated its first class in 1932. Today
Yeshiva University, which is the oldest and largest Ameri-
can University under Jewish auspices, has some 7000
students and 25,000 alumni. The stamp on this
Maximum Card was issued by the U.S. Postal service in
honor of the first president of Yeshiva University, Dr.
Bernard Revel — the highly regarded Jewish scholar,
creative thinker and eminent master of humanities.
