Although born in St. Louis, Missouri, T.S. Eliot was a
member of a proud third generation New England family.
He entered Harvard in 1906, and after completing his
bachelor of arts degree in three years, went to Germany
to study on a fellowship. While he was there, World
War I broke out and Eliot transferred to Merton College
in Oxford, England. There he was discovered by the
young American poet Ezra Pound who developed his
interest and talents in writing poetry. In 1917, Eliot's first
volume of verse, Prufrock and Other Observations, ap-
peared and quickly became the focus of attention. Eliot's
abruptly varied rhythms and themes, his mixtures of
precision and discontinuity, and his echoes of the past
were praised highly by literary critics and common read-
ers alike. In 1948, Eliot received the Nobel Prize and
the British Order of Merit. Until his death in 1965, the
list of Eliot's honors continued to grow. Today, the works
of T.S. Eliot are loved around the world.
