During the latter half of the nineteenth century, the
standard horsedrawn buggy was adapted for trade and
delivery purposes. This era of business and territorial
expansion radically changed the face of the nation.
Americans migrated from the rural areas to the urban
areas, together with the influx of immigrants, cities were
becoming congested. As cities expanded, housing space
grew critical. Many homes did not have complete cook-
ing and baking facilities. Therefore, commercial bakeries
sprang up to satisfy the demand for fresh baked goods.
These bakeries used Bread Wagons to carry bread and
other baked goods into the urban centers. Adapted from
the horsedrawn buggy, Bread Wagons were framed with
oak and floored with pine or spruce. Later, sheet metal
replaced the wooden bodies. Colorful advertisements
for the bakery were painted onto the sides of the body.
The wagons were usually drawn by a single horse, and
driven by a vendor who called out his wares as he rode
through the neighborhood streets.
