THE ROMANCE OF STAMP COLLECTING
First Day of Issue: January 23, 1986
First Issue Location: State College, Pennsylvania
Today, it is a simple matter to send a letter abroad.
However, in the mid 1800s it was somewhat more
troublesome. For, in countries like Germany, there were
numerous soveriegn states and many different routes
through rough, mountainous terrain. During this time,
the duties of the postmaster were often combined with
that of innkeeper. In addition to serving as a host for
travelers, this person was responsible for receiving and
passing along the mail to the next post, and providing
fresh horses for the postboys who carried the mail. When
the mail was due to arrive, the citizens of the town would
gather around the Post Office to wait for its arrival which
was heralded by the distant sound of the postal horn.
Today, the postal horn has come to symbolize much of
the rich postal history of Germany and other nations.
This Maximum Card depicts an antique postal horn from
the early 1900s, and an ornate mailbox used by the
Imperial German Mail Service. An official post office
sign of the German Reichspost is also shown.

Canada's Post Office was established under the British
crown in 1763. However, it was not until 1851 that
Canada issued her first postage stamp. This beautiful red
stamp. The beaver was an appropriate subject, for
Canada's early prosperity was founded on the profitabil-
ity of beaver pelts. Although the issuance of the stamp
made paying for postage much easier, delivering the
mail to isolated settlements in Canada's wilderness re-
mained a difficult problem. To deliver mail to the distant
towns and villages, the postal system utilized horse-
drawn coaches, dog teams, whale boats and canoes.
The interesting history of Canada's Postal Service is just
a part of what makes stamp collecting such a fascinating
and rewarding pastime. A rural wagon from the Canadian
Mail Service, a letter carrier from 1875, a present-day
postman, and a modern mailbox are depicted on this
Maximum Card in celebration of the worldwide Ro-
mance of Stamp Collecting.

THE ROMANCE OF STAMP COLLECTING
First Day of Issue: January 23, 1986

One of the most interesting areas of postal history con-
cerns the different signs and symbols used through the
ages to urge the postal carrier to hurry the mail to its
destination. Often, the sender would write haste, post
haste, or ride for thy life on payne of the gallows on the
letter to express urgency. Just in case the carrier was
unable to read, drawings of a man dangling from the
gallows, or a skull and crossbones were often added.
Sweden, however, had the interesting tradition of attach-
ing two small feathers to the letter by pressing them into
a wax seal. This indicated the need for speed in transit.
If black and white feathers were combined, this implied
Very urgent. Travel night and day! In celebration of the
worldwide romance of stamp collecting, this Maximum
Card depicts some relics from Swedish postal history
including a postal coach, a pair of postmen from the
1840s and a Swedish mailbox. The stamp featured on
this Maximum Card is one of four issued by the U.S
Postal Service in 1986 in celebration of stamp collecting.

THE ROMANCE OF STAMP COLLECTING

One of the most romantic and interesting postal histories
in the world belongs to Australia. Isolated from other
nations by thousands of miles of ocean, Australia's early
postal system relied on whaling ships to bring mail from
the rest of the world. During the mid-1800s these great
sailing ships were replaced with the faster and more
powerful steamships. The ship chosen to inaugurate the
new steamship mail service was the Chusan. She sailed
with her first cargo of mail from Southampton, England
on May 15, 1852. After battling stormy seas and strong
gales, the Chusan finally arrived in Sydney, Australia on
August 3, 1852. The arrival of the mail onboard the
Chusan was hailed as an event of great importance to
Australia. Indeed, the little mail ship was praised in both
Australian poetry and prose. This Maximum Card depicts
a red letterbox from the 1890s, an Australian postman
from the same era, and a whaling ship used to transport
mail in the 1840s. Australia's official postal insignia is
also shown.
