PAN AMERICAN GAMES
First Day of Issue: January 29, 1987
First Issue Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
The Pan American Union, formed by nations of the
Western Hemisphere, recognized the need to perpetuate
the Olympic spirit of cooperation and competition bet-
ween member nations. As a result, members of the
Union decided to create an Olympic-style amateur ath-
letic competition held among the nations of North, South
and Central America. The first Pan American Games
were scheduled for 1942, but the outbreak of World
War || delayed the inaugural contests. The first Pan
American Games were finally held in Buenos Aires,
Argentina in 1951. Since then, the Games have been
held every four years in the interval between the Olympic
and the Commonwealth Games. As in the Olympics,
Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals are awarded in a wide
range of individual and team sports. In 1987 the Tenth
Pan American Games were held for only the second time
in the U.S. at Indianapolis, Indiana. The stamp on this
Maximum Card was issued as part of the Opening Day
celebration of the Tenth Pan American Games.
