Born in Naples, Italy, Enrico Caruso was the eighteenth
child of a poverty ridden family. Early in his life, his
voice attracted the attention of fellow factory workers
and some of Italy's leading Opera teachers. He made
his debut in L'Amico Francesco at the Teatro Nuovo in
Naples in 1894. By 1898, his career grew as he was
selected for the tenor lead in Giordano's Fedora per-
formed in Milan. This success led him on a highly
acclaimed tour of Europe. Thus, his arrival in New York
in 1903 was eagerly anticipated. He made his Metropoli-
tan Opera/American debut in Rigoletto. Following this
triumph, he began a lifelong association with the “Met."
He also embarked on a recording career which captured
some the finest operatic performances for succeeding
generations. Caruso was supremely gifted by tempera-
ment and physique, yet his single-minded quest for
excellence led him to develop an unsurpassed style on
stage. The majestic, hypnotic power of his voice, and
its range, remain unique among opera performers.
