1870'S LOCOMOTIVE
First Day of Issue: March 6, 1987
First Issue Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
The American 4-4-0 was the classic locomotive which
became associated with the railroad's westward ad-
vance. It had a beautifully proportioned long wheelbase
and long truck type with horizontal outside cylinders
centered above the front truck. It relied on the Stephen-
son link motion, a three-point suspension and a deep
round-top firebox dropped between the coupled axles.
American locomotive builder and designer, Thomas Rog-
ers, perfected the American 4-4-0's design, and by the
1870's it became the workhorse locomotive for pas-
senger and freight trains in the United States and Canada.
Its simplicity of design and easy construction made the
American 4-4-0 the most affordable locomotive of its
time — costing approximately $8,000 to $10,000 each.
Rogers' use of a bar frame design and the three point
suspension increased the efficiency and hauling capacity
of the locomotive. As America expanded westward, the
American 4-4-0 locomotive pulled most of the passen-
gers and freight crossing the growing nation by rail.
