GIRL SCOUTS OF AMERICA
First Day of Issue: March 12, 1987
First Issue Location: Washington, D.C.
Juliette Gordon Low of Savannah, Georgia travelled to
England to meet with Robert Baden-Powell, who had
recently begun the Boy Scouts organization. While in
England, Low helped Baden-Powell form several Girl
Guides troops — the English counterpart of the Boy
Scouts. Mrs. Low returned to the United States in 1912,
bringing with her the ideals of Girl Scouting. She or-
ganized the first group of girls in the United States at her
home in Savannah on March 12, 1912. Mrs. Low named
the American troop “Girl Scouts." From that initial troop,
interest in scouting for girls grew rapidly. The Girl Scouts
of America remain dedicated to Mrs. Low's initial ideals
of building character, good conduct, patriotism and
community service. Girl Scouting offers girls seven
through seventeen years of age a single, continuing
program of development designed to meet their needs
and interests.
