UNITED WAY CENTENNIAL
First Day of Issue: April 28, 1987
First Issue Location: Washington, D.C.
A century ago, religious leaders in Denver, Colorado
decided that they could accomplish far more by working
together than they could in separate groups. Their volun-
teers joined in a single, unified fund-raising effort that
grew into the United Way. In the 1930's and 1940's,
business leaders and labor forces took up the cause,
advocating a single, comprehensive campaign rather
than multiple appeals at the workplace. The result is a
national association for some 2,200 United Way organi-
zations throughout the nation. Millions of volunteers
participate, raising money to help the needy, or spending
their time and effort to work as United Way volunteers.
Through the years, United Way has reached out to the
communities it serves, offering assistance in the areas of
substance abuse, illiteracy, unemployment, access to
health care and shelter for the homeless. To celebrate
one hundred years of human service, United Way has
formulated a new and admirable goal which will double
community resources.
