THE AMERICAN FLAG
First Day of Issue: May 6, 1988
First Issue Location: Boxborough, Massachusetts
The American flag flies boldly- a symbol throughout the
world of freedom for all... Through two centuries of
growth, the red, white and blue of her cloth have brought
tears to the eyes of the oppressed, and her stars — grown
in number from thirteen to fifty — have stood for unity
within. “One nation, indivisible ..." is part of the pledge
which binds her citizens. And today, the American flag is
hailed — an honored guest — at public events through-
out the land. Whether a baseball game or a presidential
inauguration, the first order of business is allegiance to
this grand symbol of the American way of life. Thus, the
flag is flown proudly above public buildings and private
homes in cities and towns, from the Atlantic to the Pacific,
and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic shores. And
America has indeed proved worthy, for this land of
wonder and opportunity faces a bright future filled with
promises and dreams. This Maximum Card honors the
American flag. The stamp was issued by the U.S. Postal
Service in 1988.
