BUFFALO BILL CODY
First Day of Issue: June 6, 1988
First Issue Location: Cody, Wyoming
In 1846, as Americans eyed the West, William F. Cody
was born. At 14, he answered an ad for “young, skinny,
wiry fellows, not over 18 ... Orphans preferred ...," and
the legend of Buffalo Bill began. A Pony Express rider, he
was but a boy taking on the West, but skill and daring
suited him for life on the great American frontier. Later,
in the Civil War, Cody served as a Union Scout. After the
War, he became a hunter, supplying meat for workmen
who were building the railroad. His skill as a marksman
thus earned him the nickname, "Buffalo Bill." As a
Civilian Scout for the military, Cody was awarded a
Congressional Medal of Honor for gallantry. But the
Medal was revoked in 1917, because he had not been a
member of the military at the time. In 1883, Buffalo Bill
began his famous Wild West Show, featuring Sitting Bull
and marksman Doc Carver, and Buffalo Bill himself. In
1884, the unforgettable Annie Oakley joined the show.
Touring the U.S. and Europe, Buffalo Bill brought the thrill
of the American West to the world.
