THE EAGLE AS SYMBOL
First Day of Issue: June 11, 1988
First Issue Location: Corpus Christi, Texas
The eagle has been a strong, bold symbol of American
freedom and liberty almost since the birth of America it-
self. In misty seaports long ago, sailors searched the docks
for skilled artisans who could transform this eagle-symbol
into powerful carvings to lead their ships into the open
sea. In their travels, these sailors would first be recog-
nized by the flag that flew from the masts of their ships,
then by the eagle which guided their craft. In the early
1800's, the building of a ship was a task of utmost
importance to the man who would be its captain. Every
phase of design and construction required his attention,
for the craft would define his existence for many long
months at sea. Even in its decoration, he sought perfec-
tion. The woodcarved eagle, in its many positions and
styles, became a favorite of these proud men who dared
to challenge the mighty sea. Even today, long after those
noble seamen and most of their glorious ships have
passed into history, the woodcarved eagles they commis-
sioned are part of their legacy.
