POPCORN WAGON
First Day of Issue: July 7, 1988
First Issue Location: Chicago, Illinois
In the early 1900's, popcorn was often sold by street
vendors, and it became a popular treat. Bags of steaming,
popped corn brought smiles to young and old alike. But
as a source of food, popcorn dates back much farther than
the 1900's. Thousand-year-old kernels have been found
during archeological expeditions. And the first Europeans
to reach the New World wrote of the toasting of popcorn
by the native Indians. The kernels were also used in Indian
religious ceremonies and sometimes as hair adornment.
The stringing of popcorn for holidays became a tradition
during Victorian times, as decorative hanging popcorn
garlands became a sign of Christmas cheer. In the United
States, popcorn took on a more casual air as Americans
quickly made it an everyday treat, the perfect accompani-
ment to a day at the ballpark, an afternoon movie, or the
carnival scene. Today, popcorn may be buttered, glazed,
flavored, or mixed with peanuts or almonds. It can even
be microwaved for a fast and easy treat.
