NEW YORK RATIFIES First Day of Issue: July 26, 1988 First Issue Location: Albany, New York In the state of New York, the Anti-Federalists had done a good job of organizing and, but for the timing of their Convention, they might have won the vote and kept New York out of the new United States. Articles appeared in the local newspapers against, as well as for, the Constitution, with the opinions and viewpoints of such spokesmen as “Cato,” “Brutus,” “Sidney," and “A Republican" regularly appearing in print. A committee of Anti-Federalists organ- ized in Albany to help manage the elections of delegates to New York's Constitutional convention. The committee was successful, and as the Convention convened in Poughkeepsie in the summer of 1788, the vast majority of delegates were opposed to ratification. But then the news arrived that New Hampshire and Virginia had ratified, and the convention realized that a failure to ratify would leave New York standing alone. Thus, New York dele- gates voted to ratify the United States Constitution on July 26, 1788.
