While working for an electronics firm, Chester Carlson
noticed that there were never enough copies of docu-
ments available, and there was no quick, easy way to get
more. Looking for a solution, he devoured available
information on the imaging process. Then, much to his
wife's dismay, he began experiments in her kitchen sink.
There, on October 22, 1938, “Xerography'' was born.
Carlson worked hard to convince a skeptical business
community that it needed his invention. Twenty-one
years later, xerography was incorporated by a small
photo-paper company into the first practical copy ma-
chine, the Haloid 914, later known as Xerox. Carlson's
invention became one of the most profitable products in
the world, but he is also remembered for his generosity -
he donated close to one hundred million dollars to charity
during his lifetime. He also invented an easy way to make
copies — at the touch of a button. To celebrate these feats,
the Postal Service honors Chester Carlson with the stamp
featured on this Maximum Card.
