HAPPY BIRTHDAY
First Day of Issue: October 22, 1988
First Issue Location: King of Prussia, Pennsylvania
Birthdays are a time to celebrate, to honor another year's
passing, and to reflect on the goodness of life. To children,
a birthday means parties, balloons, gifts, games, and
friends. To adolescents, it marks another milestone on the
road to that elusive goal of adulthood and long-sought
“independence." To adults, a birthday is a time to re-
member all the birthdays passed ... to assess one's life and
achievements ... to reevaluate the goals set long ago ...
and to adjust to the passage of time. For most, a birthday
is a happy time, a time to look to the future, too. And so,
on birthdays of people we hold dear, Americans like to
communicate – sending cards and gifts to mark the
special day. And every detail – from the decorative
wrapping to the colorful envelope — makes for an added
bit of joy. Perhaps this special sentiment is the reason why
the United States Postal Service chose to include a lovely
“Happy Birthday" stamp in its 1988 Special Occasions
booklet. Accompanying a birthday card, the stamp will
bring a spark of joy that makes its message clear.
