MARY CASSATT
First Day of Issue: November 4, 1988
First Issue Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Though born in America, Mary Cassatt spent much of her
life in France where she sought the company of the finest
impressionist painters of her day. Cassatt was a painter of
such talent that, on seeing an exhibit of her work, Edgar
Degas invited her to show with the impressionists. Under
his guidance, Cassatt's own style progressed, and she is
today recognized as a leading member of the impression-
ist school. Favoring the familiar, Cassatt specialized in
capturing some of the tender, quiet moments in life. Her
paintings are peaceful and loving, many reflecting special
moments between mothers and young children. She
combined colors and patterns in interesting, informal
styles to portray reality in memorable ways. And in the
1890's, she created a series of prints for which she is also
remembered and praised. Unfortunately, toward the end
of her life, failing eyesight hindered her work and the
inspired career of Mary Cassatt came to an untimely end.
This Maximum Card is a tribute to Mary Cassatt and to the
tender beauty of her work.
