GENERAL “HAP" ARNOLD
First Day of Issue: November 5, 1988
First Issue Location: Gladwyne, Pennsylvania
Nicknamed “Hap," Henry Harley Arnold graduated from
the United States Military Academy in 1907 and em-
barked on a military career that would span two World
Wars and the development of a sophisticated and effec-
tive United States Army Air Force. Just four years after his
graduation, Arnold went to Dayton, Ohio, to take flying
lessons from Wilbur and Orville Wright. He would soon
combine his flying skills and keen military mind to
become a leader of America's military forces. When the
country faced World War I, Arnold was stationed in
Panama. He organized and commanded the 7th Aero
Squadron, proving himself an able leader and airman. He
then dedicated himself to the development of air power in
America. During World War II, he was one of the
country's most important military leaders, taking com-
mand of 2.5 million men and more than 75,000 aircraft.
And, in 1949, President Truman awarded “Hap' Arnold
the first-ever U.S. commission to the rank of permanent
five-star general of the Air Force.
