Back:
In the 1880's, America was a young country bound by
the strength of family ties. Comfort, safety and a sense
of belonging were felt by everyone within the family,
and were shared with hometown friends and
neighbors ... for they too were considered relatives.
Without question, the greatest joy the family could ex-
perience was the birth of a new baby. When old enough,
the baby was taken on strolls through the neighborhood
by proud parents. Often, the child would ride in regal
style ... in a wicker baby buggy, or pram, as they were
called at the turn of the century. Promenading down the
street past gabled houses with well-shaded porch swings,
the precious baby got his first look at the world from
under the hood of the rattan baby buggy. Indeed, the
baby buggy has come to symbolize the happiness and
joy of a simpler time ... and a fond memory from
America's national nostalgia. The stamp featured on this
Maximum Card features a baby buggy which was offered
for sale by the St. Nicholas Toy Company in 1887 for
the price of $18.50.
