Fresh water as a source of Life
Ramsay
Back:
On May, 12, 1984, the eyes of the world were on New
Orleans, Louisiana, for the grand opening of the
Louisiana World Exposition. The 184-day Exposition
was held on an eighty-two-acre site along the banks of
the Mississippi River where a network of waterways,
fountains, and waterfalls reflected the theme of the Ex-
position — “The World of Rivers — Fresh Water as a
Source of Life.” Spectacular exhibits and entertaining
attractions from all over the world were featured at the
Exposition which was dedicated to the resourceful use
of the world's rivers. In honor of the Louisiana World
Exposition and its fresh water theme, the United States
Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp featuring
a Louisiana bayou teeming with wildlife. A wide variety
of birds, fish and reptiles . . . all of which depend on
the fresh water of the Mississippi as “a source of
life” . . . are depicted on the stamp. Indeed, the wildlife
of the Louisiana bayous ... as well as all living things
depend on “Fresh Water as a Source of Life."
