One of the most popular movie stars of his day, the great
Douglas Fairbanks ruled the silver screen as the “King
of Hollywood" in the early twentieth century. Starting
out in a series of comedy films, Fairbanks discovered in
himself an inherent ability to make people laugh. He
used his incredible athletic agility to further supplement
his natural screen personality. Indeed, nearly all of his
early films abounded with action. Even though he loved
playing the part of a hero-like comic, Fairbanks' real
success came later in his life. At this point in his career,
Fairbanks began a series of important films that made
him known to all the world as a brash, daredevil
swashbuckler. Among the most famous of these classic
films were: The Mark of Zorro, (1920)... The Three
Musketeers, (1921)... and The Black Pirate, (1926).
For his outstanding contributions to the development of
motion pictures, Douglas Fairbanks was awarded a post-
humous Academy Award in 1939.
