For nearly forty years, the most influential man in the
United States Senate was Richard B. Russell. The son of
a Georgia State Supreme Court Justice, he became in-
terested in politics early in life. In 1930 at the age of 33,
Russell was elected governor of Georgia — the youngest
man to serve in that office in the history of the state.
While serving as governor, young Russell gained the
reputation of a brilliant legislator and great leader. Rus-
sell's extremely successful record in the governor's office
led to his election to the United States Senate in 1933.
Not long after his election to the Senate, Russell became
one of the most influential men in Congress, and became
an expert in military affairs. Russell continued to serve
as a dynamic leader in the United States Senate until
1971. In honor of this great American legislator who
served his country for more than fifty years, the United
States Postal Service issued a 10c definitive stamp fea-
tured on this Maximum Card as part of the Great Ameri-
can stamp series.
