CRIME PREVENTION
First Day of Issue: September 26, 1984
First Issue Location: Washington, D.C.
Until July 23, 1965, crime had always been solely the
problem of the victim. However, on that date President
Lyndon B. Johnson suggested that a new approach to
crime would be much more effective and make crime
prevention everyone's business. President Johnson be-
lieved that religious groups, and private and public estab-
lishments — as well as the private citizen — should all
participate in the crime prevention crusade. Recently,
the National Crime Prevention Coalition has set out to
make the public aware of this pressing issue which all-to
often is overlooked. The Advertising Council provides
technical assistance for the campaign as a public service
... and McGruff, The Crime Dog, is certainly its greatest
contribution. Since the start of the campaign, more than
140 million dollars have been donated . . . and the
results are noticeable: a survey showed that over fifty
percent of the American public recognizes McGruff as
The Crime Dog — a hopeful indication that more people
are helping to “Take a bite out of crime."
