FAMILY UNITY First Day of Issue: October 1, 1984 First Issue Location: Shaker Heights, OH Some of the most striking pieces of memorabilia existing today are old black and white family portraits. They seem almost comical, as the subjects are dressed in antique clothing with their hair styles reminiscent of none seen in modern America. But the true significance of these aged photographs is well beyond the clothing and hair styles worn. Such photographs are cherished remem- brances of family, perhaps long gone relatives that have grown even more dear through the years of absence. Indeed, the family is the focal point of American society. Many of the settlers of the American nation came over the sea as families and traveled as families in great wagon trains across the frontier of America. Faithfully, families have been there through all of the nation's greatest duress, shedding light on hope and lending even mightier strength to the individuals who have defended their country against the most terrible of dangers. It is with these examples in mind that one can easily agree that the family is indeed the backbone of American society.
