A great leader in the reform of national policy to help
the underprivileged peoples of America, Eleanor
Roosevelt was one of the most active ... and admired
... First Ladies in American history. As the wife of
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Eleanor's most
important activity was the political work she did for her
husband after he suffered a polio attack in 1921. Eleanor
traveled around the nation watching, speaking, inspect-
ing, writing and reporting back to the President. When
American troops were sent overseas in World War II,
Eleanor went too. She visited with the troops to bring
them a bit of cheer. Eleanor Roosevelt's remarkable spirit
of helping others throughout the world continued even
after President Roosevelt died. More than ever, she ded-
icated her life and energies to helping others. In 1946
she became the chairman of the United Nations Commis-
sion on Human Rights. In honor of the 100th anniversary
of Eleanor Roosevelt's birth, the Postal Service issued
the stamp on this Maximum Card.
