His lyrics sparkled with wit and sophistication, while his
melodies conjured images of debonair men romancing
elegant women in “top-drawer” Manhattan ballrooms.
American lyricist and composer Cole Porter reigned as
king of the musical comedy theater for more than thirty
years. Born in 1892, Porter studied music as a child.
Completing his formal education, Porter debuted in a
modest 1916 musical comedy. He later traveled to Africa
to entertain French troops and won the Croix de Guerre
for his efforts. He then studied music in Europe and upon
his return began to write the romantic ballands and lyrical
dance tunes that brought him fame. His first Broadway
musical success came in 1929 and he soon dominated the
Great White Way. The Gay Divorcee, Kiss Me Kate, Can-
Can and Silk Stockings played to packed houses nightly,
and songs such as “Night and Day," and "You're the Top”
became unforgettable hits. The stamp and design on this
Maximum Card feature Cole Porter, whose music and
lyrics enticed a generation of Americans to fall in love.
