TORCH OF LIBERTY
First Day of Issue: June 25, 1991
First Issue Location: New York, New York
Lady Liberty was born in the minds of French intellectuals who
wanted to commemorate America's independence and
friendship with France. In 1871 French sculptor Frédéric-
Auguste Bartholdi selected Bedloe's Island in New York
harbor for the statue's site. Fifteen years later, Bartholdi's
masterpiece – a metal-girded, copper-sheeted figure of a
woman holding a torch aloft-stood on a massive granite and
concrete pedestal which dominated the tiny island serving as
its home. The Statue of Liberty remains today one of America's
most beloved memorials. Her torch and flame symbolize for
many the guiding light of freedom which is America's promise.
In 1985 Lady Liberty underwent restoration and received a
new torch, replacing Bartholdi's badly deteriorated original. A
gold-leafed flame now glitters above the copper repouseé
torch, painstakingly replicated from Bartholdi's model.
Liberty's torch and flame glow ethereally in the design featured
on this Maximum Card. Together with the stamp, the design
salutes Liberty's brilliant beacon of hope.
