TO THE HEROES OF DESERT STORM
First Day of Issue: July 2, 1991
First Issue Location: Washington, D.C.
On August 2, 1990, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein –
the Iraqi tyrant greedy for domination of the Middle East
– launched a brutal assault on the tiny, defenseless
country of Kuwait. In response to Hussein's naked aggres-
sion, U.S. President George Bush initiated Operation
Desert Shield — a unilateral mobilization of both active
and reserve military forces to Saudi Arabia. On January
16, the day after a United Nations deadline directing
Hussein to withdraw from Kuwait, word came. Operation
Desert Storm— the liberation of Kuwait — had begun. For
the next forty three days, more than half a million Ameri-
can sons and daughters from all five branches of service
— the Air Force, Navy, Army, Marines and Coast Guard
– battled an implacable enemy. Vastly outnumbered,
they fought valiantly and achieved one stunning victory
after another. On February 28, Saddam Hussein — his
heinous war machine decimated and his army in rout
capitulated. This Maximum Card is dedicated to the
Heroes of Desert Storm.
