Few animal infants are as winsomely appealing as a baby
deer. Spindly-legged and sloe-eyed, the fawn is a capti-
vating creature which epitomizes the engaging inno-
cence Mother Nature bestows on many of her children. As
winter's punishing harshness fades, the first fawns of
spring appear. The doe, as a female deer is called, gives
birth amid the isolation and safety of the deep grasses at
woodland's edge. The polka-dotted infant weighs from
three to six pounds at birth and lies quietly where its
mother has placed it. When danger threatens, the fawn
becomes as immovable as the ground itself. Since it emits
no scent during its first crucial weeks of life, the camou-
flaged fawn cannot be detected by hungry predators. As
spring melts into summer, the fawn follows its mother and
forages for food. Innately curious, the young deer avidly
explores its surroundings but never ventures far from
mother's side. Nature's handiwork is perfectly captured
in the wild beauty and graceful lines of one of the
woodland's most endearing creatures — the fawn.
