Dennis Chavez was born on April 8, 1888, in Los Chavez,
New Mexico. He left school at 13 but his fierce love of
learning and steadfast faith in democratic principles
served him throughout his life. His fascination with poli-
tics began early, and he was a seasoned Democratic Party
campaigner before he could vote. In 1916 Chavez re-
ceived a Senate clerkship and journeyed to Washington,
D.C. He completed his LL.B at Georgetown University in
1920 and returned to New Mexico to practice law. In
1930 Chavez won a seat in Congress. Five years later
President Franklin Roosevelt appointed him to fill a
vacancy in the U.S. Senate, a position Chavez held until
his death in 1962. A staunch proponent of New Deal
policies, Dennis Chavez worked diligently for federal fair
employment legislation and for measures to benefit mi-
norities. The stamp on this Maximum Card is a philatelic
rarity. Printed in Canada, the stamp is the first U.S. release
printed outside the United States since the introduction of
American stamps in 1847.
