PUPPY LOVE

In Charles Schultz' cartoon strip Peanuts, Charlie Brown
spends much of his time trying to win the heart of the “little
red-haired girl." His shy confessions of love and poetic
musings on her charms to friend Linus perfectly illustrate
the childhood and adolescent affliction known as puppy
love. Those who have suffered its pangs or observed
stricken adolescents know that puppy love casts a deep if
fleeting spell. It sometimes strikes early in elementary
school, before boys and girls develop the antipathy which
characterizes later grade-school years. Young girls may
write notes in class to each other, praising the attractive
qualities of particular young men, while the boys them-
selves tend to demonstrate their affections in more physi-
cal ways — chasing their beloveds around the play-
ground, pulling hair or teasing. Eventually young couples
may walk each other to or from school and spend after-
noons doing homework together. Although some cases of
puppy love are short-lived, many intensify as the years
pass and blossom into deep and abiding love.
