WORLD COLUMBIAN EXPO
First Day of Issue: January 24, 1992
First Issue Location: Rosemont, Illinois
In 1486 King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain
granted an audience to an Italian mariner named Chris-
topher Columbus, who maintained that India could be
reached by sailing west. Six years later, the royal couple
agreed to sponsor a voyage of discovery, and in August of
1492, Columbus — commanding the crews of the Niña,
Pinta and Santa María — charted a westerly course and
set sail from Spain. On October 12, a sailor on the Pinta
cried “Land!", and within hours Columbus strode onto
the sandy beaches of the Bahaman island of Guanahaní,
which he renamed San Salvador. Columbus had discov-
ered something truly miraculous — El Nuevo Mundo:
The New World. Centuries later, citizens of the United
States celebrated the 400th anniversary of his voyage at
the World Columbian Expo, held in Chicago in 1893.
This palatial “White City” created unexpected excite-
ment for its 21 million visitors, for the famous Ferris
Wheel carnival ride and a dazzling modern wonder —
electricity — both made their American debuts.
