W.E.B. DU BOIS
First Day of Issue: January 31, 1992
First Issue Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Into a nation fresh from civil war and beginning to heal
from the loss of hundreds of thousands of its own, W.E.B.
Du Bois was born on February 23, 1868. Early on, Du Bois
became a voice for black Americans, receiving a Ph.D.
from Harvard University in 1895. While most were
theorizing about social conditions in the nation, Du Bois
was investigating and experiencing the racial climate of
the time. In 1909, Du Bois became the co-founder of what
would become today's National Association for the Ad-
vancement of Colored People (NAACP). Through this
organization, Du Bois called for civil, political and eco-
nomic equality of the suppressed black population. This
view clashed with another important leader, Booker T.
Washington, who called for economic equality alone.
The two men effectively split the black community into
two segments: Washington's “conservatives," and Du
Bois' “radicals." Through his editorship of the NAACP's
magazine Crisis, Du Bois was able to gain respect and
clout as a leading voice in fighting racism.
