Born on March 19, 1891 in Los Angeles, California, Earl
Warren devoted his entire life to public service. After
graduating from the University of California, Berkeley,
Warren went on to a remarkable career which greeted
success at every corner. After serving nearly 15 years as
district attorney for Alameda County, California, Warren
served as attorney general of the state of California, then
three terms as governor. In 1953, Warren left the Califor-
nia governor's mansion to become chief justice of the
United States Supreme Court. There, Warren was best
known for his decision in the landmark Brown v. Board of
Education, the school-desegragation case in which War-
ren maintained “separate educational facilities are inher-
ently unequal." During his tenure on the Supreme Court,
Warren presided over many important cases in this period
of sweeping change. In 1969, Warren stepped down from
his high position, but only after he had left an indelible
mark on justice and law in the United States.
