PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
First Day of Issue: September 8, 1992
First Issue Location: Rome, New York
A century ago, Francis Bellamy penned the words that
were henceforth to mark the beginning of the school day
for millions of American children: “I pledge allegiance to
my Flag and the Republic for which it stands; one nation
indivisible, with liberty and Justice for all." This version of
the Pledge of Allegiance was first published on Septem-
ber 8, 1892, in The Youth's Companion magazine, for
which Bellamy was an assistant editor. In 1924,
Bellamy's original words were modified slightly and the
phrase "the flag of the United States of America" was
substituted for “my Flag." And in 1942, the Pledge was
officially recognized by the U.S. government. In 1954, at
the urging of President Eisenhower, the words “under
God" were added. Today, the Pledge of Allegiance
recited daily in many American public and private
schools reads: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the
United States of America and to the Republic for which it
stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty
and justice for all."
