CHRISTMAS
First Day of Issue: October 22, 1992
First Issue Location: Washington, D.C.
“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped
him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger;
because there was no room for them in the inn." So states
Luke in Chapter 2 of his Gospel. As the Nativity story
unfolded, Caesar Augustus, mighty ruler of the vast
Roman empire, had decreed that “all the world should be
taxed...every one to his own city." And so it was that
Joseph, a humble carpenter from Nazareth in Galilee,
returned to the city of his birth — Bethlehem in Judea.
With Joseph was Mary, his espoused wife who was great
with child. They arrived in Bethlehem late one evening.
Mary's confinement was near, and Joseph hurriedly
sought rooms at the inn. Full of people come to be taxed,
the tiny hostel had no room for them. But hearing of
Mary's condition, the compassionate innkeeper gave
them lodging in a tiny stable. In this humble shelter, Mary
gave birth to a Son whom she named Jesus. And all the
angels in Heaven rejoiced, for she delivered no ordinary
child but One whose birth forever changed the world.
