New York is the largest city of the United States. It is the second city in size and the financial center of the world. Greater New York, created in 1898, comprises five boroughs - Manhattan, which is the heart of the City, occupying Manhattan Island; the Bronx, a residential and business section, north of the Harlem River; Brooklyn on the east across the East river; Queens, adjoining Brooklyn on the northeast and Richmond which occupies Staten Island, separated form Manhattan by New York Bay. Down through an exciting and turbulent history, today has emerged the Magic City that is New York. Industry and Commerce find their home here, side by side with the Arts. Broadway, The Great White way, is the center of interest. New York has colleges and schools of world wide renown, including Columbia University, Fordham University, New York University, L. I.
