Additional Details:
Picturesque Site of Idaho's First Mission, Hwy. 3, 6 miles N.W. of St. Maries, on the shadowy St. Joe River. A primitive log cabin mission, long since gone, was built by the Coeur d'Alene Indians, supervised by the black-robed missionaries. Two-thirds of the tribe were baptized and agriculture was begun. Floods gave trouble however and in 1846, the mission moved to Cataldo. Note the attractive historical marker, one of nearly 200 erected by Idaho Hwy. Dept. |
