"SADDLING UP."
The method of "saddling up" as in "breaking"
is very rough, consisting in saddling and bridling a
beast by main force. The cruel curb-bit and heavy
stock saddle, with its high horn and cantle, is adopted
from the Spanish-American horse gear, and the huge
blunt spurs and chaperajos of the rider, as well as the
corral in which the horses are sheltered, all indicate
the same ancestry. Some ponies never submit to
saddling without a series of squeals and kicks, while
an intelligent pony soon accepts the condition impos-
ed and picks up a good deal of knowledge of the cow
business on his own account..
