WOOD HAULERS, SANTA FE, NEW MEX.
The scrub pine and cedar trees of New Mexico's mountain
sides furnish an abundant supply of wood, which, even to-day,
rivals coal as a fuel. In these quaint wagons, sometimes al-
most entirely the handiwork of their owners, and sometimes
largely a collection of cast-off parts of broken-down buggies
and wagons, this wood is hauled, often for miles, by the rug-
ged and ever faithful burros to towns where it is consumed in
the open fireplaces, and wood-stoves of the housewife. Wood-
hauling is one of New Mexico's recognized occupations.
