The Pennsylvania Turnpike was projected
primarily to break down the barriers formed
by the Allegheny Mountains, embodying the
most modern principles of express highway
design.
The primary objectives have been attained
by piercing the highest ridges of the Appala-
chian Mountains with tunnels; and a separa-
tion of all highway and railway grades.
