New Mexico, known as "The Sunshine State" is a land
of contrasts. Although it is the fourth largest state in the
area, it has one of the smallest populations. The population
varies from Anglo American and Spanish speaking Ameri-
cans to full blooded Indians. It has most modern cities and
villages without electricity, running water or other facili-
ties. Altitude ranges from snow-capped peaks to plains
almost at sea level. It has the second oldest inhabited
white settlement (Santa Fe) but was the 47th State
admitted to the Union.
