Dr. Otis R. Bowen was inaugurated as Indiana's
44th Governor on January 8, 1973. A physician from
Bremen in Marshall County, Governor Bowen earlier
served seven terms in the Indiana House of Rep-
resentatives, including an unprecedented four ses-
sions as Speaker. Now seeking to become the first
Governor since 1851 to succeed himself, he was
unopposed in the 1976 primary.
